The Essentials:

We are looking for an Assistant Editor to help our teams expand their impact. You will report to the Publisher of Kokila and the Associate Publisher of Nancy Paulsen Books to provide administrative and editorial support, all while coordinating with various departments in the division, agents, authors, and illustrators. In doing so, you’ll need to be comfortable with a rapidly changing agenda, managing multiple tasks at once and your ability to prioritize and maintain attention to detail will be key.


With this in mind, to be successful in this role we feel that you’ll need to have:

  • Great organizational skills to navigate a high-volume environment
  • Clear and effective communications skills, especially as you liaise remotely across multiple teams
  • Strong ability to prioritize your work and calendar independently
  • Strong ability to manage competing and changing priorities
  • Evidenced ability to manage communication and workflow in a proactive manner
  • An interest in the current children’s literature market


Responsibilities and duties:

  • Assist Publisher and Associate Publisher with editorial tasks such as:
    • Drafting descriptive text about our books, including selling copy
    • Editorial support, including review of routing passes
    • Reviewing submissions
    • Serve as liaison on behalf of Publishers with other departments or individuals to set up meetings, share requested materials, and print materials for meetings
    • Updating online metadata
    • Researching competitor titles across various platforms and current trends
    • Keeping track of Kokila/Paulsen reviews and awards
  • Assist Associate Publisher with daily administrative and clerical tasks such as:
    • Managing calendar
    • Filing expenses
    • Mailing author copies
    • Support with billing and contracts
    • Registering books with Library of Congress
    • Scheduling recurring departmental meetings
    • Preparing departmental PowerPoint presentations
    • Updating and maintaining department contacts information
    • Serve as the administrative liaison when interfacing with other departments
  • Assist with managing Kokila Instagram and Twitter accounts, which includes post scheduling and writing copy
  • Help review projects submitted to Kokila through PYR’s Emerging Voices program, which adds inclusivity to our submission process
  • Coordinate and send out Kokila creator newsletter

The salary for this position is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
